Epiphyllum oxypetalum
Didn't have any blooms last year, so I was happy when one started forming last week. Though this one flower didn't bloom on the main big plant, but came from a smaller one that had just two big leaves 😆 (it was a cutting from the main one).
Made sure I had a better setup this time around with a nice grey background and soft lighting, but I still missed the early opening hours 😑. Still happy with this time-lapse. This was from around 9:30PM-9:30AM

Epiphyllum oxypetalum, also known as Kadupul or Queen of the Night, is considered one of the most expensive flowers in the world, due to its rarity, fragrance and the fact that it doesn’t survive long enough to even be picked. It blooms rarely (usually once a year) and only at night, and then will die by the next morning.

One Night Queen
Tumblr media
An Epiphyllum oxypetalum flower (Queen of the Night) getting ready for its one-night glory in the Gardens by the Bay. Photo credit: Jonathan Chua.
This cactus flower would apparently bloom in one night and wither by dawn.

Can somebody who knows more about botany (and history maybe? idk??) tell me why these two flowers:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Saussurea Obvallata and Epiphyllum Oxypetalum,
are linked/confused with each other so much so that even google can't get it right?
Tumblr media
the only thing they seem to have in common is sometimes they have the same common name, Brahma Kamal. Even though I'm pretty sure that namesake is more for S.O. which grows in India and E.O. is native to Mexico and also more commonly known as Lady/Queen of the Night.
If anyone knows why, I'm begging, please tell me!!

I need to admit: I got gripped deeply by [this reply I gave] because even if I'm not a fan of doing sad sceneries... the theme around mourning and how to cope with it is fascinating.
... And I drafted something quickly at 3 am but is a mess of notes and quotes KSDJSGDHJ And because I'm super thin in energy and for me the year is already done creative-wise, I decided to put this bunch of brainstorming for next year and... let it grow like a plant haha.
For now, have a doodle: is a Queen of the Night, known for being a nocturnal bloomer and its flowers die before dawn.

The Swinging Red Epiphyllum
Any Epiphyllum gets my undivided attention while blooming. This red Epiphyllum oxypetallum is blooming on only one side because I hung it at a window over the winter and forgot to turn it. Look away and you will pay. I hope the other stems will be inspired to bloom now that it is hanging in the sunshine. I use two hooks to hang these so they are easier for me to water. This makes for a lively…

Small Gods in Holy Places
My mum calls me to come look at the flower. It's the flower my parents have been telling me about for days, How it only blooms at night and lasts for two hours before wilting. It is gone before dawn, A fleeting moment of a lifetime, Proof that a short life can still be beautiful, Still be enough.
A weed grows between two statues in the garden, Paint bleached white by years in the sun. It is green and spiky and the opposite of stone statues, Too set in their ways to ever be soft or malleable or grow. There is a chance it will outlive them, too. I am unsure if they are guiding it or if it is protecting them. Either way they are sisters supporting each other, Three small gods in communion.
The flower is epiphyllum oxypetalum, Also known as the queen of the night. The weed is sonchus oleraceus, Also known as the sow thistle. It is equally as holy.
